It’s real! I officially signed and executed a “shopping agreement” with a Hollywood producer! The producer, Marguerite Henry, just started her own company, Ray of Light Entertainment, after having worked for years as an executive producer at MarVista Entertainment. She is currently partnered with a pretty big name in distribution, which is super exciting.

The next step is create a “show bible” and “pitch deck.” Upon hearing this, I immediately googled “What is a Show Bible?” and “What is a pitch deck?” Essentially, a bible is document featuring all the details about the TV show beyond the pilot—from how Season 1 would end, to what Season 4 would look like. It has tons of character descriptions and explanations of the broader intention of the show.

The pitch deck is a Power Point presentation used to sell the show at in-person meetings to studio execs. It’s full of graphics, photos, and sexy tidbits. It’s all flash and smooze.

Weird thing is—I’m aware of the fact that I’m not a screenwriter. I always knew if I ever got lucky enough to see one of my books adapted, someone else would write the script. But the show bible is something else—I can’t imagine some else summing up my characters, their arcs, and my inspiration. So over the weekend, I sent the producer everything I had on PROOF OF LIES that was used in sales and marketing. This included character bios and plot summaries. She was nice enough to say the materials will be helpful.

But my husband, the sales guy, was quick to note that these materials have one intention—to SELL. They don’t have to be accurate. They can get something wrong about my antagonist, and it doesn’t matter. The producers are going to say what they need to say to sell this adaptation. Translation—stay in your lane.

I know this is only one tiny first step that might never get to step two, but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts. Wish me luck!

I’ve got a call set up with a #Hollywood producer next week to discuss PROOF OF LIES! Crazy. Who knows if anything will come of it, but I’m excited to have that on my list of #thingstodo.

And since I’m looking forward to a phone call, I thought I’d talk about #communication. When it comes to #literaryagents, this is a #bigdeal. I’ve seen a lot of #writers on @instagram express being afraid to contact their agents–apologizing for emailing them or feeling like they’re bugging them. Don’t! This is a business relationship.

I previously had an agent who struggled (this is an understatement) with communication. I once had a #Latinx #yafiction project go on sub, and then she didn’t reply to my emails for two months. It wasn’t just me. My agent siblings & I had an online #writerscommunity to share when we heard from her. So when I started to #query my next agent, communication was key. All my agents since have responded to email either instantly or within 24 hours.

Now, #aspiringauthor, how friendly should you be? One of my previous agents wanted to talk about her divorce (a lot), another didn’t care if I had kids. Personally, I’ve found being #friends can make things murky. So know what works for you

As for sub, your agent will ask how much you want to know. In my opinion, #bookworm, always ask for the submission list. This allows you to #Google editors receiving your book and get a sense of them. It also means that if the book doesn’t sell, you know who’s seen it in case you submit it again in the future.

It’s up to you whether you want to see a #rejection. At first, I thought it would be better for my #mentalhealth not to. Now, I want every #word from an editor. My skin is thicker, and often their reasons for passing are helpful if I #amwriting. Besides, I find not knowing worse.

#Authorsofig, do you want to see rejections? Do you prefer a friendly or strictly business relationship?

Week 7 of the submission process! Ugh! I swear time has stopped moving forward. I know I should be used to this.

When I sold my debut #youngadult novel, AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS, it was on sub for a couple of months. Then my agent had a conversation with a #bookaholic editor specifically looking for #ownvoices #Latinx #yafiction featuring a #quinceañera. I tweaked my #YAnovel, and we sent it to that #independentpublisher on a Thursday. We got an offer from the editor four days later on #FatTuesday while I was at #MardiGras in #NewOrleans. (No better place in the world to get good news.) My most recent published #trilogy, beginning with PROOF OF LIES, is also #YA. It took 7 years and 3 different agents to sell. Yeah, you read that right. Additionally, the #publishing house that picked it up had previously rejected it 2 years prior, in an older version, when I was with a different agent. So be #persistent!

I can tell you that over the course of those 3 agents, there were 11 editors who “expressed interest” in PROOF OF LIES. This means the editor reached out to my agent to say they #read and liked the book. After getting “additional reads” in-house, my manuscript went to 6 Acquisitions Meetings. For those in #bookstagram who don’t know, this is when sales/marketing weighs in on whether they think these #YAbooks will sell to #readers. Only 1 imprint made an offer.

Despite all of this, I never gave up. #IreadYA and I’m a #bibliophile, and this is the only dream I’ve ever had. But be forewarned, #bookaddict, this business is not for the easily discouraged or thin skinned. Rejection happens, but so does success. All #authorsofig started in the query pool, just like you.

So if you’re a member of the #writerscommunity, do you have a rejection-to-redemption story? Did you drown in rejections before getting an agent? What keeps you going when the business of #writing feels too hard?

Some #writingcommunity members asked about “sub”. Sub is short for “submission,” which is the process that occurs after you sign with a #literaryagent. The agent will write a pitch and “submit” it to editors.

The “pitch” is similar to the #query. Mine includes an intro paragraph with comp titles, paragraphs summarizing my #yalit project, and bio paragraphs detailing my #publishedauthor accomplishments. I’ve had an agent who previously used my entire #queryletter verbatim as the pitch. And I’ve had agents write the pitch fresh themselves. Personally, I prefer the latter, which is my current agent’s process. The reason being—your agent is selling your book. He knows what editors are looking for, and he uses #buzzwords to grab their attention.

Now which editors your book goes out to is determined by the agent. I’m a #yaauthor, so my agent cultivated a list based on his relationships with #YA editors, recent acquisitions from #youngadult #publishing imprints, and each editor’s #mswl. My #YAnovel, EYES OF SLEEPER, is currently on submission with 13 editors—all of whom expressed interest in #horrorstories, dark #mysterybooks or #thrillerbooks, #ownvoices and/or #Latinx novels. In my experience, this submission size is standard, but the process can vary.

I’ve previously had an agent send to all of those editors in one swoop, including the manuscript in the initial email. However, my current agent subbed in three batches, asking editors to request the #book if they’re interested. I think all of them requested. This is the reason I prefer this method. With one massive pitch attaching the manuscript, you never know if the editor was interested in the #bookidea and you can get a “no response” #rejection same as when you’re querying. With the second method, the editor has expressed interest and you will likely get a response either way.

For me, I’ve been on sub for 6 weeks, and so far we’ve only heard back from 1 editor.

So, #booklovers, any questions? Have any of you #bookworms been on sub before? Any #authorsofinstragram have a different experience? Ask questions in the comments—I’m happy to keep talking about my #writerslife.

      Hi, I’m Diana & I’m a #bookaholic. Actually, I’m a #yaauthor and I recently passed 2,500 followers on @instagram! I know, right?So I thought I would re-introduce myself.

I’ve published six (yes, six!) #YA novels with an #independentpublisher, which means my books are traditionally pubbed but not with the Big Five. My latest novel, EYES OF THE SLEEPER, is a #Latinx, #YAlit , #horrornovel, and it’s currently on submission. This means I’m in the 7th circle of hell.

Actually, hell would probably be more exciting. Sub is more like an endless trip to the DMV where your number is never called. You just sit, staring at your laptop, waiting and waiting, hoping the next ping will be from your #literaryagent with an offer.

Writing is a solitary profession and we often don’t talk about the ugly parts—i.e. the anxiety-inducing submission process that’s been making me wake up every morning at 5 am. So I’ve decided to switch my feed from a #bookstagram or #booknerd account, into something that would appeal more to the #authortube & #authorlife folks. I want to lift the veil on the often secretive #publishing process and talk more about what happens AFTER you get an agent, and AFTER you’ve been published, and AFTER you’ve had to switch agents (more than once!).

So if that’s sounds like something you’d be into, stay tuned!

Also, in addition to being a #bookaddict (#IreadYA , #thrillerbooks, #horrorstories, and #mysterybooks especially!), I also actively #yogapractice to relieve the stress of publishing and #motherhood (I have two kids!). I’m also a #catlover and you will see a lot of Princess Mittens if you stick around.

      I live in the #philadelphia area and I’m a huge @philadelphiaeagles fan. I’m also a proud @bostonu
alum! #TerrierTuesdays! And I’m half #puertorican and half #polish (for those wondering if my Latinx novel is #ownvoices).

Thank you for following & if there’s something you want to know about the pub process, ask in the comments. Want to know how I get an agent? Or maybe four different agents? (Yup.) Want to know what it’s like to be contracted for a trilogy? Want to know how the sub process works? Let me know what interests you below! (at Villanova, Pennsylvania)

It turns out the majority of the books I have with a red spine are horror or murder related. Go figure!

Here are some great Valentine’s Day reads from classic sonnets, to World War II internment camp love, to the grandmother chick lit, to teen romance, to my self-indulgent young adult novel set in Puerto Rico!

After a dozen years in the publishing industry, I’ve learned a few things for sure. One of them is that when you start querying agents, or go on submission with editors, you should always, ALWAYS, start writing something new. Those processes are incredibly stressful and completely beyond the writer’s control. You can’t be in that editorial meeting nor can you control what else is in the agent’s slush pile. But you can control your writing.
So after having researched and plotted a new thriller idea before the holidays, I’m finally ready to face the blank page again. Wish me luck!

Goodbye 2019! A lot of changes this year—I published my 6th novel, I switched agents, I wrote my first horror novel, and I took my kids from the Jersey Shore to Disney. I’ve got a lot of resolutions for 2020–practicing yoga more, cutting my plastic waste, and taking my publishing career to the next level (what that looks like exactly I’m not sure).
Here’s to a 2020 with new goals, a new president, and new adventures! 🍾 🎉
